Daniele Ratto e Costanza Fasolis are the winners of the last weekend Gravel Road Series World Edition, second round of the GRS race series. The whole world edition event will remain for a long time among the participants memories as an epic one.
Before the World Edition race day, Franco Monchiero GRS coordinator and World Edition Organizer said he wanted to design a race course representing his own idea of gravel cycling. That is exactly what happened in the Roero territory with a competitive and highly technical race embodying the spirit of gravel.
The world edition took place in the Roero territory, a Piedmont region. Close to the Langhe region and very often overshadowed by it, the Roero is no less important. It is a popular touristic destination, home of precious vineyards and delicate fruits productions with its territory constellated by castles and small villages.
Even if the surroundings suggest a more relaxed way of cycling, the competive spirit wasn’t missing last Sunday.
The riders line up was quite impressive. Among the over 100 bikers enrolled in the Specialized Gravel Road Series round two, we spotted:
Pascal Richard:Road cycling Gold medalist in Atlanta 1996 and former CX World Champion
Emma Bilham: professional thriatlete and winner of several Ironman
Daniele Ratto: former Pro Tour athlete, stage winner at La Vuelta and long course winner at the Nova Eroica 2018
Martino Fruet: professional mountain biker, winner of the 2017 Gravel Road Series
Emanuele Poli: winner of the 2018 Nova Eroica Gravel
Rebecca Gariboldi: professional road biker, winner of the 2017 Gravel Road Series
Costanza Fasolis: Professional mountain biker
All the prominent athletes were presented at the Saturday event presentation press conference, held at the ATL Langhe- Roero touristic board headquarters with the presence of its director Mauro Carbone and several local authorities like Assessor Balduino Armando, Andrea Cuda – head of the Eco Museum Roccje & Roero and Aldo Sartore – Head of Alba Village.
During special stage #1, Martino Fruet set what appeared at the beginning an almost impossible pace to follow for the other riders but on the following stages two and three, Daniele Ratto ( Team Todesco) closed the previous gap and opened a new one, crossing the finish line on first position with a 12 seconds advantage over Martino and a minute on Stefano Corino (GS Arredamenti Berutti). Among the Women category, Costanza Fasolis (Giant Liv Polimedical) took the win, Rebecca Gariboldi (Team Isolmant Specialized)was 20 secs behind while Ania Bocchini (Supernova Factory Team) was third.
